Mobilizing sufficient financing remains a major challenge in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Despite signs of progress, investments that are critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remain underfunded. Interest in sustainable financing is growing, but the sustainability transition in the financial system is not happening at the required scale. Systemic risks are rising and parts of the multilateral system are under strain. This 2019 Financing for Sustainable Development Report, produced in collaboration with over 60 agencies of the United Nations system and partner international organizations (the Interagency Task Force on Financing for Development), recognizes the scale and urgency of the challenge. <div><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/threepsmars/image/upload/v1662067291/yctph8rcr7irrbegglke.png" alt=""> </div>Ban warns illicit drugs impede sustainable development, calls for every solution to be weighed.Illicit drugs promote violence, impede sustainable development, endanger communities and undermine people’s health, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned today, calling on the global community to weigh every option available to confront the issue.“This global challenge is interconnected with corruption, terrorism and illicit flows of money,” Mr. Ban told UN official and delegates at a meeting ahead of a UN General Assembly special session (UNGASS) on the world drug problem in April.“Those who traffic in illegal drugs may also be involved in human trafficking, kidnapping, firearms smuggling, murder and numerous other crimes. But the world drug problem is also a health problem, linked to overdoses, the ravages of addiction and the spread of HIV and hepatitis,” he added.In all our work, which is based on the international drug conventions, the human rights of people, especially the vulnerable and their communities, must come first.The UN chief insisted that implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted last year by UN Member States to wipe out poverty and fight inequality over the next 15 years, will require “collective partnership and solid commitment.”“UNGASS 2016 provides an opportunity for the international community to enter into an informed and wide-ranging discussion on drug policy in all its aspects,” Mr. Ban explained. “It can help in the development of objectives, based on human rights and concern for the health and welfare of people, that will support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”He underlined that the Special Session can also reaffirm the central principle that no country can confront these issues alone. “Shared responsibility can ensure the delivery of balanced and comprehensive drug policies with a renewed focus on human rights and public health, including prevention, treatment and care,” he added.But the UN chief said the world can also go further, looking at different options such as alternatives to prison or punishment for appropriate minor offences; greater access to controlled medicines for the relief of pain and suffering; and promoting alternative livelihoods for vulnerable farmers and their families.The UN General Assembly special session on the world drug problem is scheduled from 19 to 21 April at UN Headquarters in New York. HOW TO MAKE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT A REALITY – As the world advances into the age of sustainable development, there is a dire need to bridge the gap of understanding the basic elements concerned with sustainability in terms of social, economic and environmental benefits. This is more crucial for Africa as her working-age population is expected to double to 1 billion in the next 25 years, surpassing both China and India.However, sustainable development and growth are required, and the onus is on leaders to address systemic structural changes that can boost investment, and create an environment in which business, and entrepreneurs, can thrive. This is also necessary to diminish vulnerability to commodity price fluctuations, capital market volatility, mounting public debt, climate change and persistent development challenges.&nbsp;Making the new sustainable development agenda a reality was the focus of a panel discussion organized by UNDP Geneva, the Graduate Institute and the Swiss Confederation in March 2015.The discussion, entitled, “From vision to implementation: How can we make the Sustainable Development Goals a Reality,” brought together representatives from the UN, governments and academia to consider what it will take to put people and planet on a more sustainable path for the next 15 years and beyond.World leaders have called for an ambitious long-term sustainability agenda to succeed the Millennium Development Goals at the end of 2015. Expected to be adopted in September, the post-2015 development agenda, will seek to reinforce commitment to achieve all MDGs as well as break new ground with goals on inequalities, economic growth, decent jobs, energy, climate change, sustainable consumption and production, peace and justice, among others. All of these goals are be proposed as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).“The primary actors in delivering the SDG agenda are governments – after all they will be the signatories of the new agenda in New York in September,” said Magdy Martínez-Solimán, UNDP’s Director of Bureau for Policy and Programme Support. “They will need to reformulate policies taking into account their national realities to help achieve the goals, as well as provide the regulatory and incentive structure that will align business decisions with the SDGs. While governments will be central to implementation, the SDGs call for a global partnership and other players will be essential to support governments to achieve their goals.”The UN is currently preparing a strategy to support Member States and others to implement the new agenda once it is adopted. Making UN policy support available in an effective and coherent way will help the countries accelerate progress on their priorities, think about sequencing of reforms, trade-offs and regulatory regimes, explained Martínez-Solimán.Michael Gerber, Swiss Ambassador and Special Envoy for Global Sustainable Development stated, “The Post-2015 Agenda will require a true global partnership for sustainable development to achieve the SDGs. This Global Partnership needs to be universal in every sense and should therefore not only include the UN and governments – but also companies, civil society organizations, investors, and individuals all around the world.”Panelists agreed that the institutions and practices needed to be looked at in a much more profound manner and go beyond business-as-usual. This is dependent on the student’s preference and availability. International students willing to do physical study must consider the cost of their living and maintenance in Paris.Considering that the programme is a second degree and in order to meet the schedule of working students, online classes will be organized mostly in the evening on weekdays and during weekends. Prospective students must be ready to make time out to attend the classes as final assessment would require 75 percent attendance of the online classes. Students who complete their online programme will be invited for a physical graduation in Paris if interested.FEESThe fee for the online programme is fixed at €1800, while for onsite study in Paris is €9500.
