Why Nigeria is the Next Economic Power – Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy. With a population of 177 million people whose incomes and opportunities are rising, it is poised to be one of the world’s 20 largest economies within the next decade. This economic assent is powered by an average growth rate of 6.4% over the past five years, one of the fastest in the world.International business leaders and investors are taking notice. In 2013, Nigeria attracted an estimated $7 billion in foreign investment. Multinational companies like Proctor &amp; Gamble, Nissan, Unilever, Dow Chemical and GE are making investments in manufacturing, consumer goods, infrastructure, services and agriculture. These business sectors are driving new employment for Nigerians, resulting in millions of jobs created over the past five years. And government support for small and medium enterprises is contributing to growth, job creation and entrepreneurship.“Nigeria’s promise has made it a test-bed for the Africa strategies of consumer-goods firms. This is not only because of its size. The dramatic improvement in living standards is aided by Nigeria’s well-capitalized and well-regulated banking sector, which has increased loans to farmers and small businesses and introduced mobile banking technologies.Nigeria’s Burgeoning Car Market – Fewer cars are rolling off cargo ships into Nigerian ports. In their place, the first wave of “built in Nigeria for Nigerians” cars are being produced at the new Nissan manufacturing plant in Lagos.Nigeria is rapidly becoming the primary target for automobile manufacturers looking to take advantage of the growing African consumer market. Question 1 - Did INEC refuse to upload results? Well, INEC said it had technical glitches, whether it was deliberate or unplanned, I do not know. Could it be a competence issue? With the extent of my knowledge in Information Technology, I will say one cannot tell, except one investigates the series of actions, but I do not think it has to do with competence, it looks most likely unplanned, considering that the uploads resumed and many people could later confirm their PU results to be correct. If they uploaded it later and it was correct, it sure points to the fact that they could have uploaded it earlier if there were no glitches.Question 2 - Which results did INEC announce when nothing was uploaded? This is where I see many people do not understand how the process works. INEC created a platform for the public to view results polling unit by polling unit, the portal is called INEC Results Vieweing Portal, shortened to iREV. The key and operational word there is VIEWING, that is, a view ONLY solution.iREV has nothing to do with collation, but people protesting the results have been misleading people that it has something to do with collation. The purpose of iREV is to showcase transparency to the public, the process of collation itself is transparent to all political parties if they choose to excercise their rights and this is how it happens. Elections hold at the smallest unit called polling unit, once concluded, the result is announced at the PU. Do take note that ALL political parties have the right to be present at the PU to witness voting and announcement of results. Upon conclusion at the PUs, the results are taken to the next level called Wards, a ward has many PUs under it. Collation happens at the ward level and just like at the PUs, party agents also witness the collation. From the ward, the results are taken to the Local Government collation centre, same procedure, after local government figures are collated, they are taken to state collation centres. It is the totals arrived at at the state collation, that are taken to the national collation centre.The results being announced in Abuja are figures already collated at 3 levels - Ward, Local Government and State - all winessed by political parties, with the collation having nothing to do with iREV. The parties have situation rooms, they already have their own figures and that of their opponents, the winner knows, the loser knows, it is therefore funny that political parties will be taking advantage of failure of the iREV platform to perform as promised, to rile up anger in people. The leading parties have not spoken about collation being faulty and I am sure they witnessed the collation at all levels, they have been dwelling iREV that did not work and I keep asking, what does iREV have to do with collation? iREV was just for the PU Presiding Officers to snap the result sheets and upload for people to access.I am anti chaos, we do not have to destroy our own country whenever we are dissatisfied. The parties protesting would never have raised dust about iREV if the figures they had were in their favour. The clamour to abort the process was because they have the figures already and it wasn't in their favour, it takes no genius to know this. For me, if any party is aggrieved, they ought to take the route prescribed by the laws of the land, the laws already envisaged dissatisfaction and processes had been created for seeking redress, "Let everything scatter" is not anywhere in the process.I am looking forward to the cases to be put forward by the parties who have condemned the process, I am wondering if they would try to prove that they won the election conducted with a process they condemned or if they would ask for everything to be done again, having condemned the entire process.

It therefore highlights three ways by which the COVID-19 is shaping Sustainable Development.The views are shaped by IISD’s threefold mission to advance a stable climate, sustainable resource development, and fair economies as follows:Resilience is essential. It has been heartbreaking to see lives risked due to global shortages of critical medical and safety equipment, including masks worth less than a dollar. This lack of planning and preparation for the outbreak has starkly demonstrated the importance of resilience: the ability for human systems to anticipate, cope, and adapt. Resilience is also critical to how the world responds to climate change, where further temperature increases are now nearly certain. Our communities and institutions must succeed in planning for and adapting to climate change or risk further heartbreak and tragedy.Stimulus must be sustainable. Governments around the world are racing to implement economic stimulus and support packages to keep individuals, businesses, and economies afloat. While supporting their urgent implementation, we must ensure that these measures pave the way to a more sustainable economy and do not lock us further into a high-carbon future. Periods of high unemployment and low interest rates are the right time for new low-carbon investments and infrastructure, including the kind required to support the transition to clean energy.Inequality is magnified. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented global shock that magnifies the impact of inequality, hitting the poor the hardest. In developed countries, frontline workers in the service economy are among the most exposed to the virus and the least able to absorb its financial impact. And the hardest hit will be the poor in developing countries, where already-struggling workers will not have the benefit of social safety nets and stimulus packages. The G7 and G20 must immediately help these countries to finance the flattening of the pandemic curve. Deadly Kenyan protests that scuppered tax hikes and a failed coup amid fading economic prospects in Bolivia this week are violent reminders of the dangers posed by faltering economies and punishing austerity measures.Bolivia's President and former economy minister Luis Arce fended off the putsch on Wednesday but faces ongoing US dollar shortages and soaring borrowing costs that pushed the country's credit rating to "junk".Kenya's President William Ruto, who reversed support for a tax-hike measure, now must find another path to make his nation's debt pile of some $80 billion more manageable.Around the world, low-income nations were sucked into economic crisis - and in some cases, debt default - after the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic decimated parts of the global economy.Now, the crisis is reverberating in Kenya, Bolivia and other middle-income nations bearing the brunt of a surge in inflation and the rapid global interest rate rises that followed the pandemic. Borrowing costs soared and Russia's war in Ukraine exacerbated a rise in prices of fuel and food."There are a lot of governments around the world all facing the pain, delayed fiscal pain, from the interest rate hikes that we've seen in recent years" said Charlie Robertson, head of macro strategy with FIM Partners, which invests in emerging market debt."It's not a surprise that the country [Kenya] might reach a breaking point."At least 23 people died in Kenya as protests spiralled from online condemnations of the tax hikes into mass rallies demanding a political overhaul."It is not just the taxes," said Mary Ngigi, a 37-year-old clothing company worker in Kenya, on why she was protesting."When you go to the hospitals, there is no medicine. When you go to the schools, there are no infrastructures."Anger spreading Turmoil is spreading. In Nigeria, workers protesting rising fuel and food costs caused a nationwide power outage, and leaders face rising subsidy costs despite tripling petrol prices last year.Angola is also trying to cut subsidies, while Egypt is under pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a slew of spending cuts and reforms that could cause more pain for citizens reeling from record-high inflation above 30 percent.Risk intelligence firm Verisk Maplecroft warned that more subsidy cuts or tax hikes could serve as a trigger for unrest.Argentina was roiled by huge general strikes in May against painful austerity measures and planned reforms by libertarian President Javier Milei, whose cost-cutting drive cheered investors but hammered the real economy.Rising borrowing costs mean debt service gobbles a growing chunk of revenues. This puts pressure on countries, including Kenya, to raise taxes and cut spending.In 2023, a record 54 developing countries, equivalent to 38 percent of the total, allocated 10 percent or more of government revenues to interest payments, with nearly half of them in Africa, according to a report from UN Trade and Development agency UNCTAD.Multilateral banks and political risk firms have warned of a ticking time bomb for some time.While debt relief efforts had centred on the poorest nations with solvency problems, and rightly so according to the World Bank, opens new tab, not enough had been done for lower middle-income countries facing temporary liquidity pressures in the near future."Without action, 2024 will see a further rise in debt vulnerability — potentially leading to reversals in development outcomes," World Bank senior managing director Axel van Trotsenburg warned.Rising pain Kenya, like others, borrowed heavily in the mid-2000s, when interest rates were low -- and China was splashing cash via its Belt and Road initiative to lend to emerging markets worldwide.Over the past 20 years Kenya amassed some $82 billion of debt to build roads, railways and factories.But not all ambitious projects were completed, and many Kenyans felt they had not benefited, while a slew of corruption scandals spurred allegations that elites enriched themselves."There is no cut on corruption," Boniface Mwangi, a prominent social justice activist in Kenya told Reuters. "We have no problem paying debt, but...what did you do with that money that you borrowed?"Ruto has said he is waging a war on corruption and has called for those responsible for graft to be prosecuted.Kenya managed to avoid default by issuing more debt earlier this year - but at a punishing interest rate above 10 percent. WASHINGTON, June 13, 2024 – The World Bank has today approved two operations: $1.5 billion for the Nigeria Reforms for Economic Stabilization to Enable Transformation (RESET) Development Policy Financing Program (DPF) and $750 million for the Nigeria Accelerating Resource Mobilization Reforms (ARMOR) Program-for-Results (PforR). This combined $2.25 billion package provides immediate financial and technical support to Nigeria’s urgent efforts to stabilize the economy and scale up support to the poor and most economically at risk. It further supports Nigeria’s ambitious, multi-year effort to raise non-oil revenues and safeguard oil revenues to promote fiscal sustainability and provide sufficient resources to deliver quality public services.Confronted with a fragile economic situation, Nigeria recognized the urgency of changing course and embarked on critical reforms to address economic distortions and strengthen the fiscal outlook. Initial critical steps to restore macroeconomic stability, boost revenues, and create the conditions to reignite growth and poverty reduction have been taken. These include unifying the multiple official exchange rates and fostering a market-determined official rate, as well as sharply adjusting gasoline prices to begin to phase out the costly, regressive, and opaque gasoline subsidy. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has refocused on its core mandate of price stability and is tightening monetary policy including by increasing interest rates, as is appropriate to reduce inflation. A targeted cash transfer program is being rolled out to cushion the impact of high inflation on the poor and economically insecure households.“We have embarked on bold and necessary reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and put the country back on a sustainable and inclusive economic growth path that will create quality jobs and economic opportunities for all Nigerians,” said Wale Edun, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. “We welcome the support of the RESET and ARMOR programs as we further consolidate and implement our macro-fiscal and social protection policy reforms, consistent with accelerating investment and redirecting public resources sustainably to achieve development priorities.”&nbsp;&nbsp;“Nigeria’s concerted efforts to implement far-reaching macro-fiscal reforms place it on a new path which can stabilize its economy and lift its people out of poverty. “Fuel Subsidy is Gone” Those were his words. The issue of subsidy is what I have written on many times previously and will still find time to write about in the coming days to break down the fuzzy concept.<div><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/threepsmars/image/upload/v1685535228/bwpsgd6ua4cqllcpqmgk.png" alt="Tinubu takes his Oath"> Tinubu takes his Oath</div>In the build up to the 2023 presidential election, acquintances would ask me, who would you vote for? It is meant to be a personal secret (ballot is secret), but still, Tinubu, I will tell them. More than often, they seem unhappy and query why I would choose an “85 year old man”, “drug baron”, “someone who’s incoherent” and all sorts of questions that when you ask them, they always do not know those things for a fact, they hear it and propagate it without check. In 2002 for instance, I was in the university, when His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrated his 50th birthday in the open, so, it didn’t make sense to me that 21 years after, he would have added more years than 21. Well, statements like the above quote from his speech today, showcasing COURAGE, formed the bases of my confidence in him as being very capable and in fact, the most capable of the candidates that had chances of getting the numbers. I cannot point to any other candidate with his level of courage. The battles before him in the election build up are testaments of this courage. In the party primaries, for someone who last held office in 2007, he contested against a sitting Vice President, the President of the Senate, three sitting Governors and three sitting Ministers, defeating them all. Compared to one of the candidates that had to leave a competitive political party to another where there was practically no contest, he is indeed courageous.This post is about the potentials of a Tinubu administration, there are no doubts about his courage, a core ingredient required by any leader and you don’t find it always, it is scarce. Many leaders only hide behind their powers, they are not exactly courageous. Fuel subsidy for instance, is an albatross, but it is difficult to confront because we fear the ripple effects. The Buhari administration was almost there in 2020, they had hands off fuel subsidy when oil price dropped globally and prices of products also dropped. But what happened? Oil prices started climbing again and unfortunately, Naira crashed against the US dollar at the same time. Naira prices of products would go up since the currency lost value, but government was unable to let it be, they went back to subsidising it. To be candid, if not for subsidy, we would have bought petrol at N700.00 at a point and maybe be buying it at around N500.00 now (which is where I see the price headed post subsidy removal). It looks like it is better to keep the subsidy until you realise that what we spend to subsidise in a month is almost enough to build one Second Niger Bridge. Yes, the 2NB was built at a cost of about N210bn and that’s exactly what we spend to keep petrol prices cheap monthly. We have been making choices between bridges and cheap petrol and have been choosing cheap petrol. We cannot grow if we continue on that path. I was therefore happy today when I heard from Tinubu — “Fuel subsidy is gone”. It will hurt, but is a better economic decision.<h2>President Tinubu made other statements today;</h2>“Nigeria will be impartially governed with rule of law”“ We shall remodel our economy to achieve a much better GDP than we have today” — I am excited by this, productivity of our economy is too low for our population size, we need to build it to where most people have something doing, we need to get to a level where even if you retire from one job, you can still pick up another job.“In our administration, women and youths will feature prominently” I do not doubt this promise one bit, it is there in his antecedents.“We will lower interest rates” The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has under the guise of fighting inflation, been raising Monetary Policy Rates (MPR), it is currently at 18.5%. Our inflation is not driven by high demand for goods, we are not having inflation because there is so much money, so, raising rates to discourage borrowing is a wrong solution. Our inflation is mostly cost-driven, prices of goods and services increase because cost of business is high, you do not increase lending rates again, it will do nothing but further exacerbate the problem and that is what has been happening. CBN has been approaching the problem by creating further problems. I hope Asiwaju finds a way to agree on a more positive direction with CBN in this regards.Generally, Tinubu inspires confidence in those who work with him, he gives them that much confidence to push on and when he is behind you, rest, assured that he is truly behind you. His people are able to deliver for him because of the confidence that he inspires and he, in turn reposes in his people. We have been too afraid to confront many of our problems, this is why we have opportunities all around us without being able to convert them into wealth opportunities. Waste disposal used to be a huge problem in Lagos, with over 15 million living in a small land area, that problem today, has been converted to wealth. The Atlantic Ocean surge on Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island had turned properties on the road to ZERO value (and I’m not exaggerating, the properties had been abandoned). Public transportation was a problem, the BRT system grew out of it, turning public transport problem into a business where elites competed to participate in.In the coming days, weeks, months, years, we will see things unveil before us, it will be a pattern of governance that is futuristic and thinks of the wealth of the people first. His economic philosophy is Social Capitalism, he knows so well how to create reforms that will bring prosperity, but regulated to allow the people at the lower rung to also live well. I remember in Lagos when he was to introduce payment for waste collection, he told the people that I want your children to go to school for free, I want your children under the age of 12 to get free health treatment, but you will have to pay for your waste. I won’t pay for your wife’s delivery at the hospital and still pay to pack your waste. This is what his economic and governance philosophy looks like.The statements he made during his campaign did not turn out to be mere words, I therefore believe that the ones he made in his speech today will also not turn out to be mere words.
