Ethiopia’s leap toward solar energy

Small steps can be much larger than they seem, some steps forward become great leaps. Ethiopia, a vibrantly growing economy attracting many investors, will need alternative sources of energy to sustain production and economic growth. It is out of these challenges the country is looking for more clean and renewable energy alternatives.

The country has embraced partnerships with different players in the field of solar energy. The most recent investment topped more than 600 million US dollars in solar power generation. The Ethiopian government, through Ethiopian Electric Power, signed a memorandum of understanding with a US based Green Technology Africa (GTA) to develop solar energy plants in the country. The deal will help Ethiopian Electric Power develop a 300 MW new solar project in Ethiopia – with the aim of helping the country hit its goal of expanding electricity capacity from the current 55% coverage to 75% by the end of 2015. These projects will be active in the Ethiopian cities of Dire Dawa, Kombolcha and Desse in the next six months.

Ethiopian Airlines: Can the success story be replicated in Nigeria?

In an industry that is troubled by global standards, and dying, by African standards, Ethiopian Airlines has remained successful in terms of safety and profitability for its almost seven decades of existence and counting. In 2011 alone, for instance, Ethiopian Airlines received four different awards. These include African Cargo Airline of the Year, Deal of the Year 2010 Award, Africa’s Most Profitable Airline of the Year (2011 was the third in a row) as well as African Airlines Association (AFRAA) Award for being consistently profitable over the years. (AFRAA is the trade organization open to membership of African Union states in the airline business). Ethiopian Airlines’ success story is no doubt a far cry from the underperformance and/or comatose state of the likes of South African Airlines, Kenyan airlines, Air Afrique, and Nigeria Airways, to name a few. It leaves many in wonderment what accounts for such achievement? Some close watchers of the airline are of the opinion that national pride is a contributing factor.
