In partnership with the Africa Union (AU), Cercle Humaniste d’Engagement et de Reflexion pour l’Avenir de l’Afrique (CHERPAA) will be hosting her first conference on Climate Change specifically on Africa at the French National Assembly (Colbert room), Paris scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd of October, 2015.
The focus of the event is: “Global warming and development in Africa”
For the first time in France, the issue of global warming and its consequences in Africa and the preparation of COP 21 scheduled for December in Paris will not be embedded in yet another general conference on development which Africans are excluded according to CHERPAA.
Africa accounts for only 2.3% of global CO2 emissions, while the EU, the US and China are respectively 12, 16 and 25%. Yet, Africa also remains a major victim of climate change. Its impact on crops, water resources or air pollution has tragic consequences for the population. CHERPAA believes that Africans have a duty to think about the ways development may be achieved for the greater number, with respect and care for the earth.
The next Symposium October 2-3 shows the dual specificity to be initiated by the African diaspora and the voice of African civil society on issues of global warming, which cannot be disconnected from issues on development. The first day (October 2) will be dedicated strictly to climate change. The second day (October 3) will focus more directly on developing citing issues related to agriculture, solidarity and human capital.
The recommendations from the work of this conference will be sent to the environment ministers of member countries of the African Union in preparation for COP21 this December in Paris and also to Morocco who will host the COP22.
